Often times, people have been the theme of many prize-winning photos. Yet, portrait photography isn’t only about photographing a face. It is also about making a person or group of persons come alive within the picture by showing them at their best.

A good portrait photograph achieves a non-conventional aspect by capturing the subject from a unique camera angle and in a mental state that is representative of the subject. However, regular family or one-person portraits are also clicked and they are appropriate for family albums.

The most important thing in a portrait image is the close up, and the face of the subject must emerge prominently in it. This can be achieved by using an option in the camera that turns the background slightly hazy and blurred so as to make the face look more in focus. This task of highlighting the face becomes easier with a camera having a larger aperture. One the other hand, it is advisable to shoot with a normal aperture if focus on the background is as essential as on the subject, which is usually true in outdoor photography.

Without sufficient light available to shoot, photographers find it hard to take the perfect picture. But a good portrait photograph is simpler to take if certain basic rules are followed. One of the ways is to make the individual sit near the window such that the light coming from it falls on only one side of the face. The other side of the face can be lighted up by using something reflective like a white piece of sheet or board. However, However, portrait pictures taken in studios under artificial lighting often come out higher quality than those shot outside.

Another important factor that affects a portrait photograph is the ease of the subject when he or she presents for the photograph. If the subject doesn’t feel comfortable while being clicked and doesn’t pose naturally, then even the best camera and lighting technology will fail to do justice to the portrait.
