In such situation, ask questions and tell them to prove it. Then the thief will be caught. None of it may be true. They will be doing it to make you feel bad and look stupid.
Most people lie to hide their actions. One lie leads to another and just goes on. Your spouse will lie to you about everything from grocery to finance to going out. This is a complete betrayal of your trust and you should not take it.
